5 Ways To Add Fun to Your Family’s Daily Routine

Do you ever feel like your family routine is in a rut? I have been there! Have you seen those kids’ shows like Disney’s Bluey or Ryan’s World on Youtube and thought about how much fun those parents (fictional or otherwise) are having with their kids? I’ve seen so many parents talking about how inadequate these shows make them feel when it comes to playing with their kids. Well, you don’t have to rent a dunk tank or turn your backyard into a rug island to start having more fun with your kids! Here are 15 areas of everyday life where you can easily incorporate a little more fun into your routine with your kids!

Morning Fun

If you’re like me, then “fun” is not the first word you think of when describing your morning routine with your kids! Mornings tend to be rushed, stressful, and admittedly a little grumpy around here! Trying to get your kiddos out of bed, dressed, and fed on time for the start of the day can be frustrating and stressful! However, there are some ways that you can add a little fun to your morning! Silly alarm clocks that run around the house, fly, or make you complete a puzzle before they can be turned off can be a fun way to liven up the wake-up process. Or another way to make mornings fun is with a friendly competition. The first to get up, get dressed, and eat breakfast gets to skip chores for the day or choose dessert after dinner! These methods give your kids the added incentive to get up and get moving as quickly as they can!

Lunch Fun

Lunchtime at school doesn’t have to be the same boring thing every day! Cut your kid’s food into fun shapes, mix and match healthy fruits and veggies to give your child’s lunch a little color, add a funny joke or sweet note to their lunch box to let them know you’re thinking of them.  Or, if packed lunches aren’t your thing, surprise your child on their birthday, Valentine’s Day, or just because with takeout from their favorite restaurant or a pizza to share with their friends. That little extra effort goes a long way in making your kids feel special when they sit down to eat lunch at school.

After School Fun

Just like adults, kids need downtime after a long day at school. Try to make time after school each day to do something fun with your kids, even if it’s only for a few minutes, to help them wind down from a hard day of school work. Playground visits can be an excellent way for kids to stretch their legs and get out some excess energy after sitting in class all day. Setting aside 15-20 minutes after school to let your kids run and play at the park or playground is a great way to help them get into a good mood after school is done for the day. A fun way to make afterschool activities into an opportunity for family fun is by doing them together! If your child is interested in learning to play the guitar, take lessons together! If your child likes soccer, go to the soccer field and play as a family. If you’ve got an aspiring artist in the family, take a painting class together. By doing this, you not only get to make some great memories with your kids, but you also show them that you support them in the pursuit of their interests.

Dinner Time Fun

Dinner time is the ultimate family time! Whether you eat dinner at the table or on the couch with a movie on the TV, it is important to have a meal with your kids! Dinner time is the perfect opportunity to spend time together as a family, share a meal, and talk about the day. Get your kids involved with dinner time by letting them help you cook! Choose a recipe together and get in that kitchen! You can also make dinner fun with dinner games or just talking about something funny that happened in each person’s day.  No matter what you choose, making dinner time a time to bring your family closer together is always worth it!

Evening Fun

Evenings are a time to wind down after a long day of work or school.  Typically in our house, evenings are spent watching tv or playing on our devices, and sometimes that’s ok! However, if you want to spend the evenings doing something as a family, there are some great options. A fantastic way to add a little exercise to your family time is with an evening walk. Grab up the kids and the dog and hit the sidewalk. Walk around your neighborhood or find a great park nearby; even 20 minutes of walking can significantly impact your health! To make your walk a little more fun, you can add in a game of “I Spy” or a nature treasure hunt to make your walk into a game. If you’re more interested in something that expands the mind, you can do family reading time.  Choose a book (or audiobook) for your family to read together each evening, and then take a few moments to talk about what you read.  This is a great way to encourage a love of reading and critical thinking in your children, plus reading together is a great way to bond as a family. You can also choose the old standby-- movie night! Choose a movie or television show that everyone enjoys and watch it together, pop some popcorn, grab your blankets, cuddle up on the couch together and enjoy!

Bonus Tips

Adventures

Take the time to plan little adventures for your family, go to the zoo, visit a museum, or buy tickets to movies or plays.  You can make these family adventures a regular thing by scheduling them once a month or every other week, depending on what your schedule and budget allow, or you can make them spontaneous and just go whenever the mood strikes you!

Vacations

A family vacation is the ultimate bonding experience.  Take some time to sit down as a family and make a list of places you would love to visit.  Try to plan a family vacation once a year (it doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate) to create those special moments that your kids will never forget!

Holidays

Holidays are a great time to develop fun family traditions.  Of course, there are holidays that have built-in traditions like Christmas, New Year, Hanukkah, and Ramadan. But there are some lesser-known holidays that you can celebrate too! February 5th is National Eat Icecream for breakfast day, June 27th is National Bingo Day, and November 17th is National Take a Hike Day.  Check out NationalToday.com to find more fun holidays you can celebrate with your kids!

Summer Time

Summer is the best time to incorporate more family fun time because the family is usually together more while school is out. Take this opportunity to throw a start of summer barbeque or a pool party for your kids and their friends. Invite your family and friends over for an outdoor game night or plan a meet-up at a local amusement park. A fun way to add a little extra somethin-somethin to your summer gatherings is by renting a photo booth to capture all the fun!
